Dear Friends and Future Candidates,
Welcome to the California State University, Sacramento’s College of Education website. Thank you for taking time to view this site and learn more about the programs and services we offer. I am very excited about these programs, and I believe that our faculty, our students, and our staff are highly capable, knowledgeable, and resourceful individuals. I believe that the College of Education at Sacramento State prepares future candidates in our programs to become actively informed and engaged community leaders and policy makers, teachers, counselors, and administrators.
There are six departments within the College of Education, each offering a number of distinct opportunities:
- Bilingual and Multicultural Education (BMED)
- Child Development (CHDV)
- Counselor Education (EDC)
- Educational Leadership and Policy Studies (EDLP)
- Special Education, Rehabilitation, School Psychology and Deaf Studies (EDS)
- Teacher Education (EDTE)
The mission of the College of Education is to help prepare candidates who will serve, teach or work in a variety of educational and community settings. We offer credentials for elementary and high school educators ( i.e., Multiple and Single Subject credentials); credentials for special educators, adult educators, counselors and administrators; an M.A in Education in several program areas; and an EdD (doctoral degree) in Educational Leadership ( jointly offered between the Colleges of Education, Social Sciences, and Interdisciplinary Studies).
Our faculty and staff are dedicated researchers and practitioners interested in helping our candidates, as well as those considering admissions into our programs, successfully enter, matriculate, and become knowledgeable and engaged professionals. The faculty are committed to equity and social justice, academic excellence, and helping individuals achieve their academic and professional goals.
As we move forward into a 21st century emphasizing technology and globalization, we must also acknowledge and help others understand that we live and work in linguistically, gendered, racially, and economically diverse communities. The CoE faculty and staff are committed to creating educational opportunities, generating and shaping new or alternative perspectives, and making space for those seeking to gain access within our schools (Pre-K-12, Community College, and Post-Secondary), businesses, and communities throughout the Sacramento region and the state of California, as well as nationally and internationally. The faculty members in the CoE have a genuine commitment to developing scholars and practitioners who will be able to live and work in the 21st century.
Finally, it is my belief that as educators, committed to equity and social justice, we should encourage and promote positive social change in our schools, communities, and at the national, state ,and local levels of government and business. My goal is to help faculty and staff create a welcoming teaching, learning, and working environment – one that will enable our candidates to acquire the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to be successful. As you peruse our web site, you will learn more about our faculty members’ research and interests, our programs, our staff and students, and the types of services and opportunities we offer. I look forward to you checking out our site, as well as to you taking time to consider applying for admissions to one of our many programs in the College of Education.
Best Regards,

Vanessa Sheared, EdD
Dean
