Program Leader

Dr. Peter Baird, associate professor in bilingual/multicultural education, is a professor, author, musician and former bilingual teacher who was raised in Mexico. He led Travel Study groups to Cuernavaca, Mexico, in 2007 and 2008 and Oaxaca, Mexico, in 2009 and 2010. See testimonials, maps and photos at www.edweb.csus.edu/bmed/mexico.

Continuing Education

The College of Continuing Education at Sacramento State is the sponsor of this program, in conjunction with the Bilingual/ Multicultural Education Department (BMED). Participants do not have to be admitted as Sacramento State students, but will still earn three undergraduate or graduate semester units.

Credit Expectations

You will have one book to read before you arrive in Mexico, will attend language classes and seminars, and will complete a written reflection about your travel study experience for Professor Baird.

Itinerary

  • Friday, July 8: Independent travel day to Oaxaca. Participants are encouraged to travel with a partner from our group. You will be met by your host family at the airport and taken to your new home.

  • Saturday, July 9: First meal with host family and orientation at the ICO with Director Lucero Topete, including a short test to determine your language level (beginner to advanced), then a short walkabout tour of Oaxaca with Dr. Baird. Background provided on the Guelaguetza celebration that will occur over the next two weeks.

  • Sunday, July 10: Guided tour of Monte Alban and additional orientation to Oaxaca.

  • Monday, July 11: Classes begin Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. for the next two weeks, plus optional workshops and cultural activities each afternoon. Dr. Baird will have seminars several times a week and daily office hours.

  • Saturday – Monday, July 16-18: The exciting Guelaguetza will be occurring in Oaxaca City. You may arrange for tours to local villages, markets and archeological sites (prices not included). Your family homestay and meals continue.

  • Monday – Friday, July 18 – 22: Weekly class schedule continues Friday, July 22: Culminating fiesta and farewell dinner hosted by Dr. Baird at the ICO.

  • Sunday, July 24: Travel day from Oaxaca. Individuals may choose to continue independently at the ICO and with their family homestay. Monday, July 25, is the second Guelaguetza concert and folks often delay their return until after this date. Costs of extended stay are not included in program fees.
